THE TOP 10 QUESTIONS BRIDES SHOULD ASK WEDDING MAKEUP ARTISTS

Q: How long have you been doing makeup and how did you become a makeup artist?

A: The length of time that someone has been a makeup artist does not necessarily determine his or her abilities. However having suitable qualifications does. There are plenty of rouge makeup artists out there who are willing to take your money and not deliver.

Q: Do you have a portfolio I can look at?

A: The answer should be ‘yes, absolutely’. Majority of makeup artists these days have an electronic portfolio, so they should direct you to that, it’s usually on their website.

Q: I love your makeup services and your portfolio everything looks fantastic, so can you tell me what sets you apart from all the other makeup artists.

A: You’re looking for unique characteristics here, as you want your wedding to be a reflection of you. The makeup artist should be able to help you create individuality you desire and deserve.

Q: May I contact some of your former clients and see what it’s like to work with you?

A: The answer to this question should be a categorical ‘yes’. The testimonials of other brides will help you decide if this is the makeup artist you should book.

Q: What products do you use?

A: If you like a particular brand it is important to ask if the makeup artist uses that brand and if they don’t do they have similar products? Are the products they use tried and test and do they personally trust them?

Q: Will my makeup last all day and night?

A: With proper care your professionally applied makeup will last the duration of your wedding. However expect to do minor touch ups of your lipstick after kissing, eating and drinking. Your perspiration levels will determine whether or not you need to touch up your powder. Any makeup artist that answers, “yes of course” without explaining the above is lying. All makeup no matter how good the product is will require minor touch ups.

Q: How long does the makeup application take?
A: Depending on how much detail your looking for, the average time the application should take is approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Q: Do you recommend I have a trial?

A: A pre-wedding makeup trial is highly recommended to ensure all of your requests and needs are discussed before your big day. At your trial your makeup artist should talk about your colour schemes, your wedding themes, any allergies or sensitivities that you may have plus any ideas you wish to convey.

Q: How much will my makeup cost and what payment methods do you accept?

A: Makeup artists set their own costs, prices range from $50 - $200. You should be able pay by at least direct deposit/electronic transfer, bank cheque, money order or cash.

Q: This sounds like everything I’ve been looking for, what happens next to start the process?

A: The makeup artist should explain the steps required by you and them through to your wedding day starting with your trial date and time, as this will determine a number of the other steps taken.

Day Time Makeup The Professional Way

DAYTIME MAKEUP THE PROFESSIONAL WAY

By Rachel Cope

Applying your daytime makeup like a professional need not be a difficult task. You just need to know a few tricks of the trade.

It is important to start with a clean canvas. You wouldn’t paint a dirty wall and expect a good paint job, you would wash or sand it first. Same goes for applying makeup. You must start by cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturising your face, to get rid of any impurities.

I highly recommend using a primer before applying your foundation. Most professional artists have a primer in their bag of tricks. A pre-foundation primer makes applying your foundation easier, it will nourish your skin and it will increase the longevity of your finished look.

Choose a foundation that matches your skin type. Use a brush to apply a small amount of foundation at a time and blend it evenly over your face starting from your nose and working your way out to your cheeks then jaw line. Finish with your chin and forehead with what’s left on your brush. Use a short feathering motion with your brush rather than long brush strokes. Remember the key is to blend the product with your skin not to paint over your skin.

Conceal any blemishes and dark circles with a good quality concealer as close to your foundation tone as possible. Use a touch of green undertone concealer to get rid of redness and an orange-based concealer to cover up dark circles under the eyes. Then set your foundation and concealer with a dusting of translucent powder, this will stop it from shifting or creasing.

Comb your brows and fill them in with a pencil or eye shadow. Never underestimate the importance of this step. The brows frame and give character to the face.

Pat a beige or sand colour of eye shadow onto your mobile lid and then apply two coats of mascara to your eyelashes.

Contour and define the cheeks by sweeping a blush with either a pink or apricot undertone across the apples of your cheeks.

Finish your look with layer of gloss in your favourite colour.

And there you have it, the basic steps to applying daytime makeup the professional way. My next editorial on this topic will build from this article, so stay tunned for more professional makeup advice.

FIRST IN BEST DRESSED

By Rachel Cope

Your wedding day will be one of the most important days of your life, so why would you leave such an important day up to chance?

You don’t wait to book your wedding venue until the last minute in the hope it will be available. You don’t wait to book your preferred photographer until a month before your wedding and cross your fingers that they are free on that day. And you definitely don’t leave organising your cake, caterers and wedding dress to the last possible opportunity by praying that the universe is on your side and will make these things miraculously happen.

You plan all these details by booking them early so that your wedding day is not a disaster. So why then, would you leave booking your preferred makeup artist to the death knock?

The best wedding makeup artists get booked early; their calendars fill quickly, especially during wedding season months: February to April and September to December.

If you want your wedding to be a success, the talk of the town and one that your guests will remember then you need to plan and reserve every element, including your makeup artist, ahead of time. If you see a makeup artist that interests you, book them as soon as possible to reserve your wedding date.

Reserve your wedding date and book a pre-wedding makeup trial ahead of schedule. By doing this you will decrease the risk of not finding the perfect makeup artist for your important day.

Booking early will give you the added advantage of finding another makeup artist in time if you are not a good a match at your pre-wedding makeup trial.

It can be hard, almost impossible to find a fantastic makeup artist if you leave booking yours too late. Late bookings increase the risk of hiring an unqualified, dodgy makeup artist.

If you want your wedding day to be a success and one to remember then cross all your t’s and dot all your i’s and book your preferred makeup artist first!

HOW TO ACHIEVE CLEAR, GLOWING, RADIANT SKIN TO BE ENVIED BY OTHERS

By Rachel Cope

Step 1 - Skin Analysis

Determining the type of skin you have (oily, dry or combination) will determine the type of products you use. So the first step towards your cleansing regime is to figure out what skin type you have. The following skin type definitions will help you to do this:

Oily skin is caused by over-active sebaceous glands. It is typified by shininess, blemishes and pimples. Oily complexions are especially susceptible to clogged pores and blackheads and tend to have large visible pores.

Dry skin is skin that lacks moisture, often characterised by a pattern of fine lines, scaling, and itching. The skin can be sensitive, red, appear tight, be dry and rough to the touch.

Combination skin has medium pores, a smooth and even texture, healthy colour and tends to be dry on the cheeks while being oily in the t-zone (across the forehead and down the nose).

The reason for analysing your skin is so you can buy the most appropriate skin care products for your skin type. This is important because dry skin care products will do little if any good for an oily skin type and could possible do more damage and vice versa. Now that you have determined your skin type we can move onto the next steps. Each of the following steps should be conducted morning and night for optimum results.

Step 2 - Cleansing

If you are wearing makeup, remove it using a makeup removal before cleansing. The cleanser you use is determined by your skin type. So it’s essential for you to choose a cleanser that matches your skin type. A good cleanser will remove dirt, grime and any trace elements of makeup not removed by the makeup remover. Cleansing gently washes away skin impurities and begins to restore your skin. It should be soothing and calming, not harsh or aggregative.

Step 3 – Toning

Once cleansed you now need to restore your skin’s pH level and you do this through toning. The toner you choose should be the same brand as your cleanser and of course the same skin type range to match yours. A toner goes through the pores of the skin and helps to rid the skin of excess oils and impurities. Toning will also condition the skin ready for the final step.

Step 4 – Moisturising

The final step in developing a good skin care regime is moisturising. Moisturising keeps your skin hydrated and protects it from environmental damage. Once again your choice of moisturiser should match your skin type and be in the same product range as your cleanser and toner for the best outcome. It is a good idea to use a moisturiser with an SPF during the day to prevent wrinkles before they begin and a heavy moisturiser at night to restore your skins moisture balance.

So there you have it, a simple four step process to achieving clear, glowing, radiant skin to be envied by others. Of course these four steps are the foundational steps and can be built on with eye creams, intensive repair treatments, masks and skin peels etc. I suggest that you master these four easy steps by incorporating them into your daily routine and making them habitual before moving on to more advanced skin care regimes. If you are ever in doubt about a particular product make sure you seek advice from a professional.

Makeup Tips From Sydney Makeup Artist Rachel Cope

By Rachel Cope

If you have chapped lips, buff them with a toothbrush or a soft cloth before applying lipstick or lip gloss.

For smooth gliding of your lip pencil, always keep it sharp and dab a little bit on lip gloss on the tip.

Want larger fresh looking eyes? Then line your bottom inner rim with white eyeliner.

To stop your eye pencil from smudging, set it with an eye shadow of the same colour. This tip helps it to last longer as well.

Accentuate your pout by putting a small amount of lip gloss in the centre of your lips after you have applied your lipstick.

To know where to apply your blush, bend over for 30 seconds, and then slowly straighten up. Where your cheeks are flushed is where you are meant to apply your blush.

Apply mascara to your lashes before apply false lashes, it will help to blend in and stick better.

Always blow dry your hair before applying your makeup, because the heat from the blow dryer can make you perspire and smudge your makeup.

Before applying your foundation, allow your skin to absorb your moisturiser, it will help your foundation to glide over your skin.

Use an eye lash curler and curl your eye lashes before applying mascara, this will open up your eyes and make your lashes look longer and thicker.

Always apply your makeup in a room with good lighting and a clean mirror.

To set your foundation, dust your face with a translucent powder, this will help your foundation to last longer.

Regularly clean your makeup brushes to avoid contamination.

Mascara only has a shelf life of 3-4 months. All other makeup has a shelf life of about 2-4 years old. The older the makeup is the less effective it becomes and it will affect the outcome of your look.
